Fort Redwater
"Fort Redwater is stained with blood. There are a thousand and one ghosts that live there, and there will be a thousand and one ghosts that bind themselves to her crumbling, decrepit stones."
Purpose / Function
Originally built in the first Vindomoran-Venessan conflict, Fort Redwater (affectionately named Ol' Red by the legion that makes its home there) now stands as the first line of defense from an eastern assault from Venessos. It guards the only mountain pass out of the Coldiron Mountains that is traversable by an army of any size.
Alterations
Over time, Fort Redwater has undergone multiple renovations, and some have fallen into ruin and disrepair.
Currently, the fort consists of:
- The Garrison, housing the 13th Legion (or the Red Legion) and company. The Garrison consists of the Barracks (or the Strigae), the Stable, the Canteen, and the Quartermaster.
- The Principia, the plaza around which soldiers assemble, are given their orders and duties, and go about their daily lives.
- The Praetorium, or the building which houses the Legatus and other upper commanding officers.
- The Eastern Gate, the most heavily fortified gate, and the one leading directly into The Pass.
- The Western Gate, which is significantly less fortified and only occasionally maintained.
- The Castellum, the singular watchtower on the outskirts of the fort, overlooking Iron Lake.
Architecture
Built in the traditional style of Vidomoran forts, Fort Redwater is notable for being made out of red brick made from iron-rich clay from Iron Lake. The roofs of buildings are triangular and made out of clay tile, with small windows. Doors and wooden accents are made of sturdy, cheap oak wood and iron.
Most buildings are square and built mathematically, and the entire fort is arranged in a classic "playing card" formation.
History
Fort Redwater started out as a small encampment of Vindomoran soldiers fending off Venessan scouts at The Pass, and eventually grew into a sprawling pseudo-metropolis. Over time, the fort dwindled, until it became a smattering of crumbling buildings and a single, impressive iron gate.
The fort was so named because the last first decisive -- and deadliest -- battle of the war was fought there. The sheer amount of casualties caused the lake and river surrounding the fort to turn red with blood. Now it stands as the first defense against an eastern invasion from Venessos, and as a testament to the long-standing military tradition of Vindomora. The Legion stationed there is the 13th Legion, also known as the Red Legion, and are known for their pride and military might, although they -- like the very fort they guard -- are a shadow of their former selves.
