After Aher's death, the explosion of divine magic merged with the already unstable, newly formed elemental planes. The effects of such a merger weren't felt until several centuries later, when the first genies began to form.   Most genies consider themselves above mortal races for the sole reason of being made of the original essence of Aher, who they regard as their parent.   Being essentially trapped on the elemental planes, the genies did not participate in the rest of the Divine War, and were only able to cross over into the material plane after the Great Schism weakened the barrier between worlds.
