Life, Identity
Fenneck tells Erikur about his night with Evelyn.
Fenneck knocked on the Oblonsky's door and waited for a few moments before Catherine opened it. "Hey," she greeted him before turning around. "Fenneck's here!" she called out to her brother and let Fenneck inside. Erikur was sitting on the sofa, looking over some sheet music. "Hey, just the guy I wanted to see," Erikur said accusingly. Fenneck sat down next to him and Catherine went back to cooking dinner in the kitchen with Tykva, their orange tabby cat. "What's up?" he asked Erikur, confused by his distrustful eyes. "What were you doing last night?" Erikur asked him point-blank. Fenneck remembered seeing Erikur at the ball and wondered if he had seen through his disguise. "Well, that's actually why I came over-" Fenneck started to explain himself. Erikur seemed angry with him though. "You were in the palace! You were at the ball weren't you?" he whispered so Catherine wouldn't hear them. Fenneck sighed. "Well. Yes. But-" "No! No buts! You can't do that Fen! What the hell is your problem?! Do you realize how dangerous and stupid that is?!" Erikur scolded him and Fenneck felt shame creep up around him. "I had to see her, Erikur!" he finally cried out. Catherine cast them a weird glance and slowly turned back to her cooking. "No Fen! NO! What did Alexei and I tell you? It is a horrible, awful idea! You could get yourself and your family in a lot of trouble!" Erikur angrily whispered to him. "I... I love her Erik. I love her! I can't not see her again!" Fenneck said, getting desperate. Erikur looked at him bewildered by this statement. "No. You don't Fen. Maybe you think you do but you don't. You'll get over it." Erikur sighed and seemed to say these things more to himself than Fenneck. "It can't amount to anything! You can't be with her! She's a princess! She's a Malenthot! You could get killed for such an offense! Do you not realize the reality of the situation Fen?" His eyes begged him to drop this. To move on and forget about Evelyn. "You don't understand Erik," Fenneck begged him. "I... I love her." Fenneck felt his heart drop. What if Erikur was right and he couldn't be with her again? What if that was the last time he ever saw her? He was no prince, after all. He was a tailor's apprentice. Not even a real tailor. Erikur saw his heartbreak and he scooted closer to Fenneck and put his arm around him. "I'm sorry Fen but it's too dangerous. I don't want you to get hurt." Fenneck leaned against him sadly. Catherine walked over and placed a couple plates down in front of them on the table. "Eat something," she told them before sitting in the rocking chair across from the sofa with her own plate. Tykva curled up at her feet and meowed up to her. Catherine smiled and nodded to the cat. She looked up at Fenneck. "Excuse me for prying but did you say you're in love with someone?" she seemed more curious than rude and Erikur looked at her and begged her not to get involved. But Fenneck was too emotional and excited to do anything but talk about Evelyn. "Yes, I... I think so," he told her. "It's complicated," Erikur told his sister, trying to get her to stop asking questions. She ignored him though. "Who is she?" "Evelyn Malenthot. The princess." Fenneck blurted out, much to Erikur's disapproval. Catherine cocked her head and smiled. "She's a funny one. She's always in the stables hanging out with the animals." Erikur leaned back defeated against the couch. "Really?!" Fenneck asked her, excited to learn more about the woman who had captivated his heart. Catherine nodded. "She's in there every evening it seems. She likes to tend to her horse. Her horse thinks she's quite sweet and she likes to curl up in the hay with the stable cat. She hates rats though." She smiled a little mischievously when she said this. "She's also a Malenthot!" Erikur scolded his sister for encouraging Fenneck. Catherine shrugged. "You hang out with Jasna all the time." Erikur gave her a look. "Sure, we're friends to a degree. I'm not in love with her though." He and Catherine shared a weird look that confused Fenneck. "She seems sweet Erik." He begged his friend to join his cause. Erikur shook his head. "Maybe she is Fen. But that's not enough to love someone. You don't know her at all. You've seen her maybe three times. Why don't you wait for your thiramin before you fall in love?" Erikur begged him. Fenneck shrugged. "I don't know! I just know that I love her Erik. She's so beautiful and perfect! I can't just move on! I have to be with her again!" Erikur sighed heavily and pulled back away from Fenneck. He put his head in his hands. "You had sex didn't you?" Erikur asked him. Fenneck nodded excitedly. "We snuck off to some spare bedroom last night. She was wonderful Erik. She's the most beautiful creature I've ever seen!" he started to blush and get excited at the memory. "You're such a dumbass Fen!" Erikur exclaimed and stood up in anger. Fenneck recoiled in fear at Erikur's harsh words. "Erik. Calm down!" Catherine scolded her brother. "No Catherine! He's being a fool! He's going to ruin everything!" he gave Catherine a look and she sighed, hesitantly nodding before standing up. "I'm going to my room to give you both some privacy," she said before leaving them. Erikur started pacing the floor. Fenneck felt like a child again, waiting for his father to scold him for drawing on the walls. "Fenneck," Erikur finally said turning to face him. "I beg of you. Please put this silly infatuation behind you. Trust me when I tell you that this is a dangerous endeavor that can put a lot of things at risk," Erikur begged him. Fenneck sighed in defeat. "Okay," he said sadly. He felt tears build in his eyes and he leaned back into the couch and turned away from Erikur. Erikur sighed and walked over and joined him on the couch. "I'm sorry Fen. I... I know it hurts." He reached out and gently caressed the back of Fenneck's head. Fenneck sighed and leaned against him. "Let's eat and you can stay here for the night," Erikur told him. Fenneck nodded and spent the evening mourning his broken heart in Erikur's arms. It hurt more than any other kind of pain Fenneck had experienced before. He knew Erikur was right. He knew it was dangerous and impractical. He knew the risks. It wasn't fair though. It wasn't fair to feel these things and not be able to experience the love he felt for Evelyn. "It's going to be okay, Fen," Erikur sadly whispered into his ear as they laid in his bed together. Fenneck sniffled and curled up into Erikur's chest. "It's not fair," Fenneck wined. Erikur kissed his head and sighed heavily. "No. It's not." Eventually they meditated and Fenneck tried to move on with his life. But that was easier said than done.
