History

The Freeport Time came into being when a local bard Brody Harper, who was heavy in debt was not making enough gold at the tavern telling stories.  He thought maybe he could write them down and sell, like a book, but he would make them short, and sell them cheap.  While visiting the scribes of the city he learned that it cost more to actually have the stories copied then it would be to sell them, and was on the verge of giving up, when he met an inventor named Lucas Brown who was working on an easy way to copy written works.  He has been waiting at the scribes, for just someone like Brody.
Brown showed Body a machine that he could use to create copied of one page work fast and cheap.  They started with one of Body's stories and went around town selling them for a few copper a piece.  Folks loved em and they sold out of their first run in an hour.   Brody was able to pay off his debts and make a decent living.
A little over a year later, Brody's stories were  all over, with people eagerly awaiting the next one to come out.  Some folks noticed something strange.  One of Brody's characters wore a hat with a peacock feather in it and people were copying the trend, and buying hats with peacock feathers.  The hatters couldn't keep up.  A group of wealthy merchants approached Brody and offered him gold to put a specific type of tunic in his next story, and and expected there was a demand on the tunic.  They then worked with Brody to add different things to the stories, to help increase demand.  It didn't always work, but it worked enough that they kept paying him to do so.
One morning the city guard was having trouble with a local murder of a wealthy merchant.  Some of his friend, knowing the reach that Brody's "stories" had asked him to do something different.  They asked him to add a note about the murder after his story, and ask people to come forward with clues.  The idea worked.  The publication reached so many that the case was solved in a few days and a whole new avenue was discovered.
At this point Brody had made plenty of gold, and was ready to stop writing.  Brown wa approached by another person who did not give his name, and wanted to take Bordy's place.  This time instead of one person's story, he would bring in different bards to write for the paper.  Brown by this time had discovered how to use both sides of the paper, and his new partner decided one side would be for stories, songs, other entertainment, and one side would be to write about things going on in the city.  The would give the publication a name and call it the Freeport Times.
As time went on the amount of entertaining stories grew less and less and the local information took up more and more of the publication.  Not only that, but the information had a habit of distorting the truth a bit, in order to fit a specific narrative.  Brown didn't like where this was going and ended up leaving the Times over it.  He spread tales about how the paper was biased, so the Times added a slogan to all their papers.  The Freeport Times, Fair and Balanced.
Today the freeport times it the main source of news for the residents of freeport.  Town criers in the city are a thing of the past.  While the paper claims to be fair and balanced it is clear there are certain topics that come up more than other and ther eid a definite agenda to the stories printed.
