Imperial Army
The Arganian Empire, renowned for its longevity, has forged a formidable army to safeguard its borders and confront the perilous threats that plague the continent of Argan. While conquests and conflicts with other realms have shaped its military tradition, the empire has also adapted its forces to combat the relentless onslaught of monstrous creatures that lurk in every corner.
The Imperial Army stands as a well-equipped and highly organized force, drawing its ranks from a diverse pool of individuals. Professional soldiers, conscripts, mercenaries, volunteers, and even adventurers contribute their skills and service, depending on the occasion, season, or location. With an abundance of able-bodied individuals across its territories, the empire can swiftly muster forces whenever the need arises.
In the capital city, for instance, a standing army and reserve forces are stationed within the walls and outposts. The soldiers follow a rotational duty system, alternating between "Post" duty and "March" duty. During Post duty, soldiers work within the city, benefiting from the protection of the Obelisk and focusing on maintaining order and security.
However, it is during the dreaded March duty that they are deployed to safeguard intercity travelers and escort mercantile caravans that transport goods between cities. This duty is fraught with danger as they face the constant threat of monster attacks beyond the city's protective barriers.
Nonetheless, it is a vital function of the army to ensure the uninterrupted flow of trade. As a result, most soldiers gain considerable combat experience, akin to seasoned adventurers in the realm.
The duration and frequency of rotations depend on the location, with cities handling different levels of traveler traffic. These brave soldiers receive generous compensation and benefit from a retirement system designed to foster loyalty and encourage them to remain in the military rather than seeking a life of adventuring. The Imperial Army also operates under a merit-based system, rewarding individuals for exemplary acts and service, including promotions within the ranks.
To support the development of competent officers, the empire has long established a military academy. While enlisted soldiers and conscripts can rise to officer positions based on merit, their advancement is capped at the rank of Captain or Legate without acquiring a degree from the academy or holding a peerage. Nobles, who begin their military service as honorary Legates, must also attend the academy if they wish to pursue an official career in the military.
The army serves as the empire's instrument of power projection, both within its borders and beyond. As a testament to its commitment, the empire prioritizes equipping its armies with the finest arms and armor available. Renowned for its expertise in warfare, the empire has pioneered the development of various war engines and weaponry, cementing its position as a prolific and innovative force in the realm.
