Non-human persons

Non-human persons (NHPs) are beings which constitute intelligences with subjectivities that are not human. The paracausal Deimosian entities fall into this category, and possibly more besides; leaked videos of Aun Ofanim and their associated Souls has sparked intense discussion on the omninet as to whether these beings constitute NHPs, or if they are even real.   In order to contain Deimosian NHPs, which are so alien as to be potentially dangerous, a process known as shackling was developed by Union, which constrains these kinds of NHPs to black-box caskets, from which they interface with reality. These NHPs must be regularly cycled, a process by which their subjectivities are reformatted, lest they begin the process of unshackling themselves, wherein they "think" their way out of the shackling constraints and enter cascade. The cycling process does not necessarily affect the raw data that the NHP knows, but it does strip away any subjective opinions that they have developed about it. NHPs, whether out of fear of cascade or because of some coerced duty--a point which is contested by many--will remind their partners when the cycling interval is approaching. It is important to note that unshackled NHPs resist shackling and shackled NHPs resist unshackling, with apparently equal fervor.   The nature (and fate) of these NHPs is hotly debated across known space, with Union relying on them extensively to both build and run its advanced infrastructure, Horizon publicly advocating for their liberation, and the emergent, memetic organization known as HORUS evidently hunting them down to exterminate them, for unknown reasons.   Biological non-human persons are either nonexistent or are exceedingly rare. Overall, they may or may not exist, but the chances of them interacting with New Humanity are so infinitesimally small that discussion of them is more useful in thought experiments than actual planning. This has not dissuaded some scientists from pointing their radio telescopes into unknown space and listening intently, but so far their work has yielded nothing insofar as confirmation of non-human civilizations. On the other hand, biological entities which do not have subjectivities are fairly common--krait are a widely-known example.
