Earl

An Earl is a person who holds sovereignty over a large enough stretch of land within Kavir. Though there are dozens of earls, with many being subject to another earl, the highlands are contested by six major earldoms, each with a Sitkeärli (translated as "high earl" for a lack of a better term) at its head: the earldom of Dris, the earldom of Ubrik, the earldom of Agorak, the earldom of Teris, and the earldom of Mavis.

Appointment

Following the secession of the kingdom of Kavir from the second empire of Ader, it was revealed that the melee held by Castor Aylard was rigged in favor of certain clans; this quickly led to his murder and a bloody civil war, with a scramble for power as each clan leader claimed themselves earl.
With the war in a constant and attritive stalemate, the appointment of earlhood is still very much the same: if one can proclaim it and remain unchallenged (or undefeated), one is an earl.
