Gwyn's Windmill

Gwyn's Windmill, named after Adabra Gwynn who restored it to working order in the 13th centuy, is a three stories high windmill located on top of Umbrage Hills. In the past the windmill served as Gwyn's apothecary, but now serves as a popular spot for romantic dates.

History

The windmill was constructed sometime during the times of the original settlement and is dated to the Conquest of Navara. The structure was abandoned along with the rest of the village after an orc assault during the Wars of Succession and was left untouched until 1202 when it was reclaim by Adabra Gwyn.   Under Gwyn's ownership, the windmill was rebuilt and restored to working order. After restoring it, the mill was found to be too inefficient for milling of grain when compared to the newer one in the fields around the city. While not useful for grain, the windmill proved effective in grinding herbs, mushrooms and other ingredients used by Gwyn. She was permanently given hold of the building in 1206, but only after the town's denizens pressured Harbin Wester, Taldirin's Townmaster.   The windmill served mostly as an apothecary, but also as a counseling chamber for the town's women who grew to lean on Gwyn's treatments and care. Young ladies would often confide with Gwyn about their love interests, and she would tell them to invite them over, and that she will judge if the gentlemen is fit for them or not. Gwyn's diligence and care has proved itself times and again and the windmill became the almost de facto place for first dates for the denizens of Taldirin.   After Gwyn's passing in 1238, leaving behind no known next of kin, the windmill ownership was passed to the Townmaster's Hall. The building suffered from negligence and misuse for nearly 50 years yet remained intact. Eventually it was cleaned and repainted, with maintenance being done by volunteers. Despite the lack of professional care, the building has remained intact and required very few repairs, and very minor ones at that. A local legend began to surround the place, claiming Gwyn's spirit still hanging around the place, keeping it intact and watching over the ladies of Taldirin in their search for their true love.   Until founding of the Archduchy of Taldir in 1327 the building was used as a landmark to note the eastern border of the Kingdom of Navara and was mostly used as a watch tower during the Taldirian War for Independence . In 1338, marking 100 years to her death, the tower was declared as a national heritage site, and fund were allocated to ensure its maintenance and integrity. Despite the newfound budget, the building still requires very little care.   In 1568, a series of earthquakes struck Taldirin. While damage to the structure was superficial, part the floor on the ground level collapsed, revealing an ancient dwarven ruin.

Tourism

The windmill is one of Taldirin's most known locations. The building and hill it was built on top of offer a panoramic vista of the city outskirts, the fields and the nearby woods, making it a popular spot for romantic dates, regardless to the allure of its local tales. Painters, bards playwrights and other artists also frequent the windmill, either to seek for their muse or for the wallets of those seeking love.
