Toby - Cabin Boy

Toby is a surly, middle-aged mix of goblin and gnome, perpetually grumbling about his station as the “cabin boy” despite being well past his prime for the role. Standing just under three feet tall, his wiry frame is a blend of goblin sharpness and gnomish sturdiness, with large, expressive ears that twitch in annoyance whenever someone calls him “boy.” Toby is known for his perpetual scowl and his penchant for muttering under his breath about the unfairness of life on the high seas. He’s quick to complain, especially when tasked with menial chores, and is fond of reminding anyone who will listen that he’s been “on this blasted ship longer than most of you have been born.”
Despite his grumpy exterior, Toby has deep-rooted loyalty to the ship and its captain. His unlikely connection to Captain Thandor Wildmane runs through a convoluted chain of acquaintances: his uncles’ friend’s dog once had a litter, and Toby, as a delivery boy, was entrusted with bringing a puppy to its new home—a task that, through some twist of fate, impressed the captain and got him this job. Though he often curses his luck, he’s fiercely protective of the crew and ship, and his unexpected connections and resourcefulness have proven invaluable on more than one occasion.
Toby’s gruffness and constant complaints may make him seem like a reluctant member of the crew, but those who know him well understand that beneath his grumbling exterior beats the heart of a loyal, albeit cantankerous, shipmate who would never abandon his post.
