Landvaettir

These are "land-spirits" that guard specific areas of the world. Local peoples learn to avoid the areas inhabitited by the landvaettir, but often leave offerings as a way to appease the spirits and keep them friendly. Pirate ships from Barania and other lands often adorn the head of their ships with dragon heads in order to scare away any landvaettir whenever they are coming ashore in a new and unexplored area. Travellers in the Northern Kingdoms will often find totems and gifts left alongside the road near certain groves of trees or pools in order to appease the landvaettir that live there.
