Brinda Garland
Eldest daughter of Beulah Garland. Serious, sensible and plain, she has been left in charge of the family business and the docks of Come-by-Chance while her mother is out scouring for her father. She is reportedly pregnant, advising that "we are so happy" despite the fact that to the best of Beulah's knowledge there was no relevant fella in Brinda's life when she left Come-by-Chance.
She sent a letter to Beulah by post, which was received on 20th Winterfall 866WA, which read as follows:
Dear Ma, I don’t know if this will reach you on the way down or the way back, but we thought it best to send you our love and good fortune on the way. We’re all sick with worry for Dad, but we know if anyone’s capable of sorting this out, one way or the other, it’s you. Homecoming looks to be a week early this year, as the schools went out about that much in advance. So if all’s well and the two of you are dallying back, keep that in mind. We had a little strike with the dockeys about three weeks after you’d gone, but we sorted it out. Replaced the second western rigging and gave them all an extra day since we’d taken it back during the cold snap two years ago. Seemed only fair. They gave us a hard time, but they knew who they were talking to. To tell you true, I was afraid I’d make a hash of it, Ma, but we asked ourselves what Beulah Garland would do and hell if it didn’t come through. Terry gave us a chuckle and asked if he could check there wasn’t a flight of grey under my wig. Just a joke, of course, but I wanted you to know that I’m all right here. You don’t need to hurry home. Though I kind of wish you would. Fidelius has been at it again and Carla’s four months along. So that’ll be three for you. And I suppose I’ll make four. I didn’t want to tell you this way, but I thought better this than a surprise little puffin in a blanket when you come through the door unannounced. We’re so happy. And scared. I do wish you were here, but not as much as I’m glad you’re there. And not to worry. Carla’s been the moon in the sky, and Aunt Betty’s been through every month to check in. She might be coming up around your birthday, actually, but probably a week or two later. Not much more to say, other than Waveyina still isn’t good for anything but you were right about that Coughlan boy and the two of them are now making noise about running off. You know how likely that is as well as I do. So, we’re all well up here, Ma. Go find that poor old fella. Or that rotten old bastard. We’ll keep the lamps burning. All our love, Brinda and All
