Eldyr

The Eldyr are the original rulers of Oabos. When they arrive, the Children of Radiance called the Eldyr dragons; an old word brought from their old world, but one that evoked fear. The Eldyr are gargantuan serpents with two clawed legs they use like arms, and six enormous bat-like wings. There is plenty of variation in body size and structure. Most Eldyr fly through the sky in a similar manner to water snakes, with wings spread wide along their bodies.

The Eldyr ruled over all mythic creatures since the dawn of the world. Their power is tied to the world core, the land and the elementine. All elementine and Myth Touched are bound to an Eldyr who cares for their region of the world. The Eldyr’s existence sustains the connection of their people to the World Core through their Ruling. Before humans came into the world, the Eldyr were prolific enough that elemental beings were each bound to an Eldyr who’s power was similar to their own, without having to search the world. After the humans hunted them down, few enough Eldyr remain in the world that the rulings have become determined by location, and what Eldyr is alive in a region.

Just as the power of the Eldyr fuels the power of their people, the life of the Eldyr is tied to them as well. If an Eldyr’s ruling were to be wiped out it would result in a power backlash that would trigger the withering in the Eldyr. While the withering might not mean the death of an Eldyr, it would also leave them weak and vulnerable to being slain by the Order of the Discerning Gaze. Alternatively, the death of an Eldyr severs the connection to the world core, and causes the withering in the people of that ruling. Many choose to stand and fight, to offer their lifeforce to the Eldyr protecting them for a chance of protecting their people.

The Eldyr do not discriminate in their protection. Myth touched are safe within the care of an Eldyr. Many myth touched are the result of a love pairing between mythics and humans. Even the humans in that bond are then protected by the Eldyr.

From the perspective of humans, when an Eldyr dies they take all the mythics and myth touched in the region with them. This is seen as a desperate act by the Eldyr to survive by draining the lives of everyone bound to them. Humans see this bond as a cruel one and the Eldyr as evil. Killing an Eldyr is also seen as the most efficient way to destroy all elemental beings in a region and claim it for the humans who live there.

The primal source of the Eldyr’s power is a bond to the world. The heart of the world is a semi-sentient being formed of light and molten crystal. With enough time and enough evolution of the magic on the surface of the world, this being may someday gain full sentience. As the Eldyr are killed off, the magic of the world was disrupted. As more Eldyr die the core is becoming more and more unstable. Eventually the world will reach a tipping point and start the destruction of the world.
