Abadar

The kingdom of Abadar is a large kingdom sandwiched between the Aurean Empire to the west and the Greenwood Valley to the east. It contains all land to the immiediate east of the Murkwater River, in the former Aurean provinces of Abadar and East Murkwater. As the empire collapsed in the wake of the Mountain War in 4835 AY, the two province's governors — who had long been plotting a rebelion — declared their provinces to be the independent kingdom of Abadar.   Since that time, the kingdom has had two kings, each the descendent of one of the governors. One king is the senior king, who has ultimate control over the kingdom as a whole, while the other is the junior king. When the senior king dies the junior king becomes the senior, while the heir of the senior king becomes the junior, allowing the senior kingship to pass back and forth. While this ensures an experianced leader is always in charge, the power sharing is tenuous, and the kingdom has only avoided civil war so far due to fear of the Aurean Empire, which has attempted invasions before and still seeks reconquest.   The kingdom has only survived the Aurean Empire's repeated invasions due to the Murkwater, a slow-moving but wide and very deep river that can be difficult to cross with a large army. The kingdom of Abadar has constructed a series of defenses along the river to build on the advantage the river gives them. The kingdom's stubborn resistance has also kept the empire from expanding back into the Greenwood Valley, which to this day is contested by a large number of minor kings and warlords that fight amongst each other constantly.

History

The region was part of an ancient kingdom that was also known as Abadar prior to the Aurean conquest in 215-223 AY, and was the site of multiple rebelions during the age of the dragon emperors. The ancient kingdom gave its name to both the Aurean province of Abadar and to the kingdom that exists there now.
