Chiboulam Islander (Chee-bowl-am)
The proud residents of the Chiboulam Islands. Any child born on the island may call themselves Islanders, but outsiders who have been granted land to settle on may not, even if they marry a local.
Cut off from the empire over a century ago, they have taken the title of pirate to mean any of their people who traverse by sea. Empire citizens refer to the Islanders to be a people of pirates, as their knowledge of them tends to be restricted to one sided knowledge of The War.
Naming Traditions
Feminine names
Female names on the islands tend to be plant related, translating to the names of various flowers and trees on the island. It is not uncommon for a family to have female children named after the types of berries growing on their land.
Masculine names
Male names tend to be more animal related - types of fish, mammals, and birds that can be found on and around the islands. It is common practice to give a boy a gift of his name sake on his 16th birthday, or equivently age based on race.
Family names
Family names orginated from being the fathers profession, however as now passed either paternally or maternally depending on the parents choice. Records are kept in the council building on the main island, where the family records are kept by the OrbKeeper.
Other names
Where a nickname, role or title has been assigned by the council, an indiviudal will be known solely by that name either for life or until the assigneer deems it fit to be dropped. ie, Pike Tanner is given the name Horse-Boy by a lord who's horse he tried to take for 5 years.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Each island in the group has their own dialect, but they collectively speak a mixture of Chimboulian, Common and Elven.
Major organizations
Ruled by the Chimboulam King, a mostly hedaridary title. It is passed from father to son, but may be challeged to a fight to the death for a new ruler to take over. The current king has three heir, and has not been challenged for the throne in 20 years.
