Concept
The most important thing to think about when making your character is the broad stroke idea of what you want to do. Do you want to play someone strong and heroic? Someone quiet and reserved? Do you have a favorite character from a book or movie that you want to emulate? Get some tropes set up in your mind before you even nail down any mechanical RPG details.Class
The D&D 5e Player's Handbook has this after the race, but it may be easier to go from concept to class, then pick a race you feel fits both. (or subverts expectations)Race
The species that you play helps to nail down your history within the world. Are you an orc from the Brugru horde? A human that grew up so far from the capital that you've never seen any other race? Feel free to reach out with questions about any race you're wanting to play as.Feats
In my campaign I give the option to take something called a flaw feat at first level in exchange for another feat or ability score increase (one score +2 or two scores +1). Both selections must be approved by the DM. Try to pick a flaw that makes for a compelling character and actually has the opportunity to make a narrative and mechanical difference.Backgrounds
What was your character before they were an adventurer? Were you a soldier? A Noble? A simple priest in a church? Again, this should be more of a narrative choice than a mechanical one. Feel free to reach out for help tying in this choice to the world at large.Rolling Stats
Once you've got at least a start on your character's backstory and who they are, you're ready to roll up stats. I use the normal 4d6 drop the lowest method, but I am a kind and benevolent DM that also allows you to reroll any 1s on the dice. If you prefer rolling physical dice, you can get with me either in person or over a video call to roll and record your stats. The other option is rolling belowFurther Details
Linked here is an article with 100 questions to ask your character. Use this as inspiration to flesh out your character. You don't have to answer every question, but you should know more than just your mechanical abilities. I recommend sharing this with the DM so they can have a good idea of how to help your character be tied into the world.D&D Beyond Settings
