Aubreck Drallion

A local legend, Aubreck Drallion, stands tall among his fellow villagers, both in physical height, but more so in stature. For though he is now a modest and disheartened man, he was once a leader and one of the richest folk in Saltmarsh. He owned a fleet of trading ships and even served on the Town Council prior to the arrival of Eliander Firebrand and Manistrad Copperlocks. While he no longer enjoys the status of his younger days, he is still respected as a merchant and is often consulted because of his past business successes and his time serving on the council. He has a great friendship with Eda Oweland who he encouraged to join the council when he no longer had the funds for re-election.   When talking to other townspeople, they will talk about how he had hundreds of ships under his banner dodging storms, pirate raids, and aquatic monsters to carry goods across the Oerth. They will talk in whispers about how every venture he tried turned into gold. Perhaps, they say, he felt invincible, because risk just meant profit and profit meant power. And then, years ago, while still a town councilor, his contacts in the jungles along the southern Azure Sea reported that he could monopolize trade in rare spices and herbs. All he needed to do was make a few heavy investments in the area for the infrastructure. Seeing what would be his highest profits and power yet, he leapt at the opportunity. He quickly converted many of his ships and other land-based assets into promissory notes and property deeds. He secured that portable wealth aboard his finest ship, the Emperor of the Waves. And then he sent a small fleet southward where he would then convert the assets back into cash and make the required investment to lock-up the spice trade in his favor. But Procan, the capricious one, introduced a cruel twist and let loose an unusually severe storm. This storm blasted the fleet and the Emperor of the Waves was separated from it's escort and has never to been seen again. This was a devastating loss to Aubreck who couldn't find any way to recover the lost funds and was forced back into an ordinary merchant's life. Those that witnessed the event feel that Procan was using Aubreck as a lesson to all that narrow self-interest will come back to harm you. Others pity him and say that although he had been lost to greed, this tragedy has transformed him into the stalwart man that he is today.   Observing him now, you can tell he stands just over six feet with thinning brown now graying hair and deep dark brown eyes. His once toned dark skin now hangs loosely about his waist. His voice still thrums with authority but also holds a note of kindness for all those that speak with him.
