He is a respected corporate lawyer. After the McCall Pack kidnapped Jackson, in an attempt to stop the kanima murders, David filed restraining orders against Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski on his son's behalf.
Thanks to Jackson Whittemore's return from the dead, he is aware of the supernatural, although he only knows about Jackson and Derek Hale.
He is generally uncomfortable with the knowledge, and usually acts as though he is unaware of the truth. He has discouraged Jackson from spending time with Derek.
After learning that Isaac Lahey believed he was Jackson's half-brother, David had them DNA tested, which proved the relationship.
