La Bête de Gévaudan
The man who would become La Bête was born Sebastien Valet in France in the early 1700s. As a young man, he joined the army and crossed the Atlantic to serve in the Seven Years' War.
While serving in America, he became a Werewolf, although it is unknown exactly when or how. Contemporary records state it was as the result of drinking water from a wolf's paw-print, but this is myth which has never been proved to result in werewolf transformation. It is far more likely he was simply bitten.
Because his strength and brutality assisted his unit in winning battles, his friend Marcel helped him cover up his role in the killings.
When the war ended, Sebastien and Marcel returned to Gevaudan, where a young boy was soon after slaughtered. A hunting party was put together to find the beast that had killed the child, lead by Sebastien's sister Marie-Jeanne Valet, who had a reputation as the stealthiest hunter in the village.
With help from Henri Argent, Marie-Jeanne was able to identify her brother as the murderous Beast and began hunting him through the Auvergne and South Dordogne between 1764 and 1767. Over this time, Sebastien continued to kill any humans he encountered, eventually amassing a bodycount which may have been as high as 500 people.
After three years old hunting, Marie-Jeanne finally caught up with her brother and was able to slay him with a pike made of mountain ash under a full moon.
Her mission complete, Marie-Jeanne married Henri, founding the Argent Clan and becoming the first Argent Matriarch.
