Anzu
Overview
Aether storms are the most dangerous natural force in Ithara, and the anzu are their manifestations. These huge vultures have plumage in hues of blazing red and deep indigo, and from their pinions flows a constant stream of smokey, shimmering aether. Despite this incredible power source, the anzu have little control over it: aether radiates from them like heat from the sun, and while they can focus this into elemental bursts from their breath and wingbeats, they can otherwise only determine how much aether flows from them.When an anzu is agitated, this flow of aether becomes pure chaos, roiling into an aether storm that follows them wherever they go. All the dangers of an aether storm come with this: aetheromechanical technology is disrupted, material can be transmuted from one form to another, and creatures can be transformed, if all isn't completely destroyed. Unsurprisingly, the anzu themselves are completely unaffected by the warping effects of aether.
As with many Itharan creatures, despite the incredible threat they pose, anzu can be a valuable resource. Acting as raw aetheric generators, their feathers and other body parts can serve as potent aether batteries, enough to power even trains and airships. As a consequence of their power, anti-magic fields completely nullify their abilities, making it easier to restrain or transport them. Countless airships have been annihilated in these attempts, however, and there is little chance the anzu can be properly tamed.
