Naga

Overview

Humanoid from the waist up and serpentine below, naga have gained a wide variety of reputations in Ithara’s history. Viewed variously as the divine servants of the Turquoise Serpent, gluttonous fiends from the depths of Ersetu, or the embodiments of those who have escaped reincarnation through enlightenment, time and place change the interpretations of the naga to such a degree that they have little of their own culture. Since the snakes they came from were also largely solitary, naga have tended to adopt the cultures they arise in as their own, for good or ill.
Most naga still hold their serpentine demeanor, which those not familiar with snakes may take as stone-faced emotionlessness. However, naga still feel as varied an emotional spectrum as any other people; their expressions and body language are simply so subtle and particular that they can be entirely missed, and their much clearer expressions when emotions boil over can come off as sudden and unprompted. Naga who have trouble adjusting to these misunderstandings may simply choose to return to their solitary lifestyle.

For reasons yet unknown, some naga arise with four, six, rarely even eight arms. Even after reaching adulthood, their bodies continue to grow if they have enough food and space to sustain them, and legends of truly gigantic naga have been recorded throughout history.
