Ngoubou

Overview

Somewhere between an ox and a styracosaurus, herds of these ill-tempered ceratopsians wander the savanna and scrublands of Ithara, where they constantly war against their hated enemies: elephants, and by extension, mokele. This hatred is one-sided and apparently genetic, as ngoubou raised away from their kind will still charge an elephant - even an entire herd - on sight, brutalizing the creature until one side is dead. The scent of an elephant’s presence alone is enough to trigger an ngoubou’s rage, and there are even reports of them pulverizing elephant graveyards into dust.
It is unknown why the ngoubou loathe elephants so much; ngoubou are obligate herbivores, and while territorial, they do not treat any other species with the same unprovoked fury. Even the mokele’s lengthy oral history doesn’t have a reason for the ngoubou’s aggression. Some have theorized that the mokele once discovered the terrible secret of some ancient kingdom, and in an effort to keep the secret from ever spreading, the kingdom created the ngoubou to hunt them down. Whatever the case, to the mokele, the ngoubou are simply a terrifying bogeyman that they make every effort to avoid.
