Ogygian Entertainment

Overview

Despite the constant conflict of Ogygia, its people still enjoy a wide array of entertainment.   Most frequently, Ogygians will watch or engage in friendly athletic contests involving marathons, wrestling, shot put, log throwing, and other feats. These are usually organized by communities as recurring festivals with varying parameters, challenges, and events, all open to people both within and outside the community. Not only do these contents encourage physical exercise, but they also build a sense of community, bringing out cooks, performers, craftsmen, and bards to facilitate the events and inspire both the crowd and the contestants. Some towns even draw the majority of their income from these contests.   Musical storytelling is another source of entertainment, as bards will settle in towns and taverns to sing the tales of great heroes, horrible tyrants, mysterious nymphs, and bumbling fools, all either real or imagined. There are rumors that some of these bards whose voices are remarkably striking learned from the sirens, or may even be sirens in disguise themselves; for the most part, however, their audience doesn't care if these rumors might be true as long as the bards don't try drowning or eating them.   On a larger scale, some troupes travel Ogygia to put on more impressive performances of these tales, complete with stages, props, and costumes. While accompanied by music, these performances are usually spoken rather than sung, allowing actors who have no musical training to participate. These troupes can be a lucrative side gig for soldiers and mercenaries, as the roles usually require at least a passing knowledge of fighting skill and a healthy level of athleticism.
