Underworld

The underworld connects various planes together but souls tend to come in through the Shadowfel (south) and arrive at Purgatory. Beyond Purgatory are the mountain range known as Valhalla. To the east beyond the range is the entrance to Hell, guarded by powerful devils. As much as they want to conquer the vast wastes of the eternal war battlefield they make sure the gates to their plane cannot be easily breached. The battlefield stretches north beyond Valhalla in vast uncalcuable spaces but occupied by small kingdoms of various gods such as the dragon god of destruction and his forces.
The entrance to the Pit (Abyss) can be found in the west flowing ever downward. The Styx river (not actually water but looks like it to the untrained eye) flows from west to east across the battlefield, occassionally flowing underground.
When the souls of the dead enter this plane they are considered "Untethered" which makes them easy to capture and convert into other forms. If they run away from the gates of Purgatory and thus escape justice this can be a terrible fate indeed. Having no mass to influence the world around them they cannot defend themselves. They become just 'floating batteries' to those who call the battlefields home. Reapers sometimes rescue them if its not too late.
