Kituun

Originally a logging camp, Kituun has grown into a fairly large city, tucked away in a valley and surrounded by mountains and trees. A founding city of the Freeland Cooperative Government, Kituun takes pride in its "folksy" reputation, despite the sheer amount of money that flows through the pockets of its elite due to a nearly endless supply of high quality timber and easy access to many nearby mines.

Demographics

Settled by loggers and, a bit later, miners, Kituun is primarily filled with Humans and Dwarves. A small percentage of many other races can be found here but are such a small minority as to be notable when encountered.   The city has a reasonably large upper class but due to the local disdain for being "fancy" the wealthier citizens work hard to make sure their extravagences do not make them appear posh. Due to its fairly remote location and limited number of access points, the city isn't beset by any sort of riff-raff that might make their way here and travelers aren't even as plentiful as one would find in similar sized cities in other parts of the continent. The lower working classes generally make a good living in the woods or the mines and tend to be able to live without an overwhelming threat of poverty or starvation.

Government

A founding member of the Freeland Cooperative Government, Kituun observes the general structure of government prescribed by the Co-op and is currently led by City Lord Jace Grinnel. The City Shield patrols the city and a Regional Constable, based in the city, is responsible for policing the forests and mountains nearby.

Defences

The city's remote location and limited access remain its best defenses. It does have towers in the few mountain passes that could be used for any entry and it is prepared for attacks from the air. A wooden wall surrounds the city proper, built in the style of the original palisades that protected its earliest settlers.

Infrastructure

Kituun has a set of large airship docks which are used for the majority of its imports and exports. There is a single road of significance that cuts into the forest and connects the city to the outside world. When the weather turns bad it can be quite an isolated place. Thankfully the natural resources are plentiful and can sustain the city through any lean times.

Guilds and Factions

The Silken Satchel has a fairly robust presence amongst the merchants of the city. All reputable merchants are likely to be members.   The The Muddled Brand has a fairly subdued presence. The local guild master, Ark Grinnel, happens to be the cousin of the City Lord and is savvy enough to keep his people from stirring up too much of a fuss and forcing Jace's hand. It helps that the City Lord knows he has a backchannel into the Brand and can make use of them if the need arises to do anything he needs kept quiet.   The Shanti Sect of Kirinism has a small monastery in the mountains nearby and its monks are fairly regular visitors in town.

History

First settled as a logging camp sometime within the first century of the Imperial Age, Kituun became quickly prosperous in the wilderness of the region now known as the Freelands. Within its first century it had gone from a simple camp to a large village that was continuing to grow at a rapid pace. It started making trade deals with other cities in the region which led to the formation of the Freeland Cooperative Government in 367 AS.   Once the Cooperative was formed the expansion of Kituun accelerated further. While still wild, established trade routes suddenly had patrols that could protect travelers and those seeking their fortune in the forests and mountains nearby.
