Phalanx of the Wild

The Phalanx of the Wild is the elite military force that protects the Citadel of the Wild and serves as personal security for the Valòmar and the Circle of Five.

Squadrons

A squadron of the Phalanx consists of six warriors-- four Warrior Monks and two paladins. Outsiders often mistake the paladins for squadron leaders, but the troops are highly democratic, with all six warriors considered equals. Each squadron is entirely made up of worshipers trained under and pledged to the same god, for greater cohesion. Squadrons are always assigned and dismissed as a group, never individually; the retirement or removal of one member disbands the entire group.   There are typically anywhere between twelve and twenty-four squadrons of the Phalanx actively serving at any given time. Care is taken to ensure at least two squadrons from the same god's worship exist within the Phalanx at all times. Squadrons take shifts, alternating between resting and covering either the Valòmar or various members of the Circle of Five. There is also a training reserve that lives in the Citadel, awaiting the day when they are paired with their squadron and called up to serve.

Duties

The most important duty of the Phalanx of the Wild is to protect the Valòmar and the Circle of Five from any physical or magical harm.

Combat Abilities

Paladins of the Phalanx are armed with glaives and shields, as well as wakizashi shortswords for close combat situations. Their shields are imbued with the ability to cast Counterspell and Dispel Magic. Monks carry quarterstaffs and the daisho (set of one katana and one wakizashi) and typically have shuriken concealed within their uniforms as well.

Uniforms

Phalanx monks wear a uniform similar to the fighting habit of other warrior monks of the Wild Gods: a long sleeveless vest tied at the waist with a thin sash, over a sarashi and loose-fitting pants tied at the knee and ankle and tall Elvish-made boots.   The armor of Phalanx paladins is not made of metal, but rather highly lacquered and enchanted white maple. They wear wooden breastplates, faulds, and pauldrons over a robe with hakama similar to the Wild Gods' clerical habit, as well as vambraces and greaves hidden underneath the sleeves and robe bottom.   All cloth portions of the uniforms are pure white, except for sashes and trim that denote which god the member and their unit are pledged to: forest green for Danu, turquoise for Dagda, midnight purple for Morigana, rust red for Arawn, magenta for Lugos, or gold for Brigid.
