Spellcasting Opals
Spellcasting opals are a variant on spell scrolls invented by the elven jewelers of Kyolondë. They allow for single-use casting of particular pre-designated spells, much like a spell scroll, except their enchantment can be refreshed with that same spell by a caster skilled in the relevant schools of magic.
Wizards who speak Elvish can interpret the runes on a spellcasting opal as they would a spell scroll, albeit with some difficulty due to the extremely fine carving required. Copying a spell from an opal takes twice as long as it does from a scroll.
While the arcanoconductive properties of opals allow them to serve as a conduit for far more powerful spells than their bearers could otherwise cast, it also poses distinct danger when too many spell-imbued opals are carried at once. When one person carries more than ten spell levels' worth of spellcasting opals, the sheer arcane weight of the confined spells may warp their magic, unintentionally release the opals' spells, or both.
