The Extinguishing is the common name for the decades-long massacre in which
Orc armies drove the
Nuél-orokh out of the Dreibach Plains during the early Age of Integrity.
The Conflict
Prelude
Despite only being around 300 years old by the beginning of The Extinguishing, the nuél-orokh had grown quickly, first under the leadership of Ilga the Brave and later under the Five Sisters of Fire. Orokhim society had become more and more hostile towards nuél-orokhim over the past decades as their numbers had grown, and skirmishes between the two groups were not uncommon.
The inciting incident of The Extinguishing was Gorak the Blood-Drenched's discovery that his eldest son, Thak Longstrider, had been secretly collecting weavings from Promethean priestesses. In his rage, Gorak killed Thak, his wives, and his infant child, before publicly declaring war against all nuél-orokh.
Gorak the Blood-Drenched was the leader of the Roc-Talon Horde, an orc tribe known for its exceptionally ruthless and highly-skilled warriors. Within days, Gorak's lieutenants charged upon the nearest nuél-orokhim encampments, ignoring previous agreements of non-aggression and slaughtering civilians and trained warriors alike.
Nuél-orokhim warriors had access to much the same technological and strategic elements as the orokhim hordes, especially since the vast majority of nuél-orokhim were either direct converts from orc hordes or no more than a generation or two removed from them. The early battles of The Extinguishing typically ended in stalemates, and any advances made by an orokh tribe's treachery were often canceled out by retailation from nearby
Human or
Gnomish allies of the nuél-orokhim.
This pattern changed in the late 220s, as Gorok began to cede power to his son,
Kishin the Indomitable. Kishin implemented a new strategy of making pre-emptive strikes against any potential allies of the nuél-orokhim. Kishin was a skilled war mage who developed methods of hexing miles of cropland at a time, and he and his troops used the resulting famines to ensure no other groups could afford to shelter and feed the nuél-orokhim.
Seems incomplete, but overall this is good worldbuilding
Thank you! It definitely has a lot more phases and developments than I had time to finish-- summer camp month kind of got away from me. I will definitely be revisiting it in the future!
