Dr. Anna Larsson
Doctor Anna Larsson
Dr. Anna Larsson, director of the Synthetically Adapted Human Beings (SAHB) Project, is one of the most controversial figures in recent history. Though she may be long departed, her work has forever changed the course of human evolution and history. Larsson took human genetic engineering to its logical extreme, selectively developing several sub-species of humanity geared towards surviving extreme conditions on other worlds.
Simultaneous to the genetic research, scientists made a breakthrough in artificial gestation that allowed fertilized embryos to be carried to term outside of a human body in a synthetic womb. This breakthrough was incorporated into the SAHB project as a means to quickly establish a human population on a colony world with minimal resource consumption during travel.
Dr. Larsson blurred the lines between genius and insanity, envisioning that one day her SAHBs would be used to "seed" distant worlds with suspended embryos that would use far fewer resources in transit than a generation ship with adult colonists.
Larsson was called a "modern-day Mengele" by her detractors. Her work flirted with the uncomfortable subject of eugenics. She viewed her creations as genetically superior to naturally born humans and even humans with slight cosmetic or preventative alterations. Under no uncertain terms, she said that her SAHBs would be the inheritors of humanity's future among the stars, while the rest of humanity would flounder on Earth, outbred, outsmarted, and outperformed. Some saw this as a threat more than a prophecy.
Unfortunately Dr. Larsson would be among the billions lost to World War 3. Before her death, SAHB colonists were brought to Mars, where they flourished in isolation after contact with Earth was lost. Now, SAHBs make up a significant portion of the inhabitants of Mars, Luna, and artificial satellites. Many of them revere her as their creator and seek to carry out her wishes.
Though the SAHB rollout was less controlled or organized than Dr. Larsson probably would have wanted, the results of her work are here to stay. Likewise, the controversy has outlived her, as many debate whether the genetic modifications and extracorporeal gestation mean the SAHBs are even human anymore.
