Exclusion Zone Bypass Tunnels

The Bureau of Contaminated Land Management and Reclamation (BCLMR) and the North American Highway Safety Administration (NAHSA) have established specialized routes through nuclear Exclusion Zones that are shielded from radiation and other contaminants. These have been designated as Exclusion Zone Bypass Tunnels (EZBT) which are sometimes over 100 kilometers long and are often bottlenecks for travel and trade logistics. Single vehicle accidents or breakdowns can shut down an entire EZBT tunnel for hours, so manual driving is prohibited to remove the risk of human error.   The BCLMR and NAHSA put out specialized guidance for travelers attempting to use the EZBT. While travel conditions are always subject to local variables, the two agencies have established a general Travel Advisory for Exclusion Zone Bypass Tunnels.
