Private
Overview
The Private is the lowest rank in many armies and other ground combat forces such as the TASA Marine Corps. Privates are generally expected to have little experience beyond their initial training and occupational training and are thus given few responsibilities.TASA Marine Corps
Those enlisting in the TASA Marine Corps begin service as a Private. In some cases, individuals may enter service at the rank of Private First Class if they have participated in a Junior Cadet program or have prior service experience. Promotion to PFC is otherwise typically obtained after six months Time in Service (TIS) and six months Time in Grade (TIG) barring any major disciplinary infractions during that time. The rank of Private in the TASA Marines does not have any insignia associated with it. This leads to the unofficial nickname/pejorative of "slick sleeve" for newly minted privates who have yet to earn their first stripes.UNAS Army
In the UNAS Army and National Guard, Private is actually the second lowest rank, above Private Basic which is generally only held during training. It is one paygrade higher than Private in the TASA Marine Corps. The actual rank of Private is usually the lowest seen in an actual combat environment. The rank of private in the UNAS Army and National Guard is given the insignia of a single downward-pointed chevron.History
The term derives from the medieval term "private soldiers", denoting individuals who were either hired, conscripted, or mustered into service by a feudal nobleman commanding a battle group of an army. The usage of "private" dates from the 18th century.
