Private First Class

Overview

Private First Class (PFC) is a junior enlisted rank in ground-based forces like the UNAS Army and TASA Marine Corps above the rank of Private . Promotion to PFC is largely based on time in service, recognizing a soldier or Marine's greater degree of experience than a regular Private. Those holding the rank of PFC can be trusted with additional duties and responsibilities, but are still not considered leaders.

TASA Marine Corps

The rank of Private First Class in the TASA Marine Corps is the second rank obtained by enlisted personnel in the TASA Marine Corps. In some cases, individuals may enter service at the rank of Private First Class if they have participated in a Junior Cadet program or have prior service experience. Promotion to PFC is otherwise typically obtained after six months Time in Service (TIS) and six months Time in Grade (TIG) barring any major disciplinary infractions during that time.   After 9 months TIS and 8 months TIG (typically 14 total months) a Marine may be promoted to the next rank, depending on their job specialty. Marines with direct combat specialties are eligible to be promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal, while support Marines are promoted to Specialist. This helps distinguish personnel who have more combat expertise from those with more technical expertise or specialized skills.   The insignia for a TASA Marine PFC is a single downward-pointed chevron with a pair of crossed M7 rifles above it.

UNAS Army

In the UNAS Army and National Guard, Private First Class is the third rank, equivalent to a TASA Marine Lance Corporal. Army PFCs are given more responsibilities than a Private or Private Basic, but only rarely hold leadership positions.   As with the TASA Marine Corps, promotion beyond PFC requires an individual to go down either the "combatant" path or "specialist" path. Combatant soldiers are promoted to Corporal upon meeting the requirements to become a junior non-commissioned officer (NCO), primarily by demonstrating competency and capability as a leader. The promotion to Specialist is more "automatic" and based upon time in service, with disbarment or deferral only occurring as a result of disciplinary action or a failure to show basic competency at their chosen specialty. Being passed up for promotion to Specialist more than once is usually a sure sign of a doomed career.   The rank insignia for an Army PFC is a single chevron with a curved bar known as a "rocker" above it.

Pacific-Asia Coalition

The PAC uses the rank of Private First Class as their second rank among ground based forces. PFC is obtained after promotion from Private Second Class. The next rank after PFC is Superior Private/Senior Private.
