Praetorium Superstites

A needlessly grandiose ceremonial hall built near what was, at the time, the Coastal Safe Zone's northern border. This was a time when the Adventurers' Guilds of the safe zone had resolved to be much more aggressive in taking territory from Terra Hostili. In order to facilitate this they adopted a programme where senior adventurers that contributed to the campaign were awarded not just the usual monetary rewards but public recognition of their efforts. This was to take place in a new, purpose-built structure: the Praetorium Superstites.

Statue

Immediately above the main entrance is a statue, cast in bronze and plated with mithril so it sparkles. It was intended to portray the unconquerable spirit of heroism. It stands, with one sword raised in defiance, facing into the wilds (Although of course the territory of the Coastal Safe Zone has expanded to the point that it is no longer possible to see Terra Hostili from there). It is from this statue that the Praetorium gets its nickname: 'The Broad with the Sword'.

Architecture

The building is constructed of stone throughout, faced on the inner and outer sides with marble. The exterior has a portico that runs the full circumference of the hall. The square bases of the columns are designed so that the names of those honoured inside the hall can be carved there for posterity. The windows are tall and narrow, designed to peep out between the pillars. Originally, each was to be a stained glass scene depicting heroic deeds but a shortage of materials and skilled artisans would have pushed the completion date back further than the Guilds wanted, so they are plain leaded glass. The main entrance has large wooden doors, faced with hepatizon. There is only one interior room, where the ceremonies to recognise the achievements of adventurers take place.

Surrouding Area

Shortly after the hall was finished, it became clear that its isolated position was inconvenient for a number of reasons. A small supporting complex, where the caretakers live and which has guest rooms for dignitaries presiding over the ceremonies in the hall, was built a short distance away, screened from the hall by trees.
