Rivers of Grave & Charity

The Rivers of Grave & Charity are offshoots of the larger Broadlysle River and form the perimeter carving the plateau the Cities of Mercy and Wrath are located on ever higher above the surrounding areas.   The River of Grave runs north, while the River of Charity runs south, before converging back together at the Sullen Tributary to dissolve into the various swamplands that make up The Spicemarsh.   Though commonly referred to as a pair, the rivers do have some functional differences based on location.   The River of Grave tends to carry more silt and sediment due to its proximity to the City of Wrath, a city known for its smithing and other crafts. The River of Grave does, however, tend to run deeper and more swiftly than its twin, so while it accrues more sediment throughout the day, it also remains relatively clean. Much of the magical deposits that run into the Forged Basin tend to come from this fork, considering the artificing done in the City of Wrath.   Meanwhile, the River of Charity is free of much silt from hard labor, but it is located closer to the Fugue Wisps and tends to be shallower, wider, and more sluggish as a result. It also tends to carry a current of magical runoff from the illusory powers of the Wisps.   Given that both forks of the river contain some sort of magical residue, whether from artificing or runoff from the Fugue Wisps, fishing straight from the river is ill-advised and aquatic monsters are not unheard of. The plateau the Cities are on continues to grow taller as the surrounding rivers carve away slowly, but the risk of monster attacks does not actually dissipate as the rivers grow further from the cities, since the city's growing population tends to be a lure to those hungry for blood and viscera.   Water from these forks is used to feed the city through a series of magically enforced pipes that filter and purify as it moves. City officials assert the filtration is standardized across both locations, but those who work in the City of Mercy and live in the City of Wrath swear the water is cleaner where they work.
