Destrier (des-tree-er)

I lean low over Elisha’s neck, narrowly avoiding the tightly twisted, low hanging branches of the forest around us. I can hardly see past his billowing white mane whipping at my face, but I trust him to choose the smoothest path forward, picking his way quickly around the exposed roots that could easily take down a less surefooted beast.
— OUTSPOKEN, Book One, Chapter 3

Overview

The noble destrier may be a sign of wealth for the mighty, but to the wise man, it is much more than that. A knight's destrier is his constant companion and most trusted compatriot, the one being he can depend on to keep him out of harm's way no matter the stakes. Earning a destrier's trust and companionship is no small feat, but once accomplished, they will risk life and limb for their rider.

Domestication

The destrier was carefully bred over generations using indigenous wild horses for their hardiness, coursers for their agility, and drafts for their strength. As the breed developed, additional bloodlines were introduced to produce a visually stunning beast fit for any nobleman. Only the finest specimens were used, creating a breed that is unrivaled as any Knight or Nobleman's mount.

While destriers are certainly not naturally occurring, they often have the same intrepid, independent, unbreakable spirit and heightened intelligence as their wild ancestors. Between this and their incredible strength, it takes an experienced hand to properly raise and train a destrier for their work.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

These powerful horses are built to outmaneuver any opponent in battle, keeping their rider safe and astride. While they are primarily used as mounts for knights as they protect and defend their Laird's lands and tenants, its uses have expanded as the breed has become more popular. It is common for noblemen of all kinds to purchase the finest destriers as their personal mounts, and the breed is favored for entertainment and sport, such as jousting and tournament. A well bred and trained destrier speaks more to its owners wealth and status than any other material belonging.

These horses sound rather elegant and yet so very powerful and sure-footed! I wouldn't joust on this horse, as I wouldn't want to harm it. D:

This was neat! I know next to nothing about horses, so it was great to find out more about them.

horse genetics are so exciting and complicated. really cool to see what might happen if we pushed the limits even further.   also horses are very scary creatures and these friends are no exception. :)
