Elves

As is the norm with elves in fantasy books, they have pointy ears and something of an affinity for plants. Unlike these popular novels, the majority of elves I am acquainted with are not mighty, mystical or powerful beings. In fact, the majority are not especially intelligent or kindly either.   Elves are possessed of breathy voices. Whether this is natural or a result of breeding and genetic manipulation is unknown. Their homeland is Uncambel. Their hair always brightly colored, is said to have a life of its own and moves on neural command, which is a useful attribute for some of the criminal classes. Again, it is unknown if this is natural or a result of selective alteration. Also, I cannot say for certain whether the hair actually has a life of its own or is simply being moved by telekinesis, which is entirely possible because elves love boosting their image as supremely magical beings and are not above perpetuating odd rumors in order to further this reputation.   They have a racial predisposition towards favoring bright colors, as well as a predisposition towards eccentricity. This is reflected in their traditional garb: an oddly colored gauzy robe worn over normally styled clothing, accented by bright eyeshadow. Most of them are conditioned from birth to appreciate and enjoy this form of fashion, but a few would prefer not to. Unfortunately, elves are actually required by law to wear it, and so the fortunate intellectual few are forced to suffer through.   Elves are, in some places (mainly Maraphel) called demons. This is an apt name, in some cases. I will not comment on the existence of the supernatural beings that are demons, but the elves who have taken this term as their own have earned it. They are brutal, occasionally cannibalistic, power-mad, evil scum. What is more, they revel in this reputation and seek every occasion to further it. On occasion, demons will cooperate with their neighbors simply because they have the same survival instincts as everyone else. They will also take every opportunity to turn the arrangement around and put it to their advantage.   Some have commented that this description sounds a great deal like that of the Overlord’s job description. It does bear remarkable similarities, with an important distinction. Overlords are leaders. They can be power hungry, they can be brutal, they can be evil scum, and they take every chance to make themselves appear larger than life compared to those around them. But they are leaders. They answer to their people, and even the most ridiculously self-serving will make concessions to keep the populace happy or give wealth to a favored few. A demon has no such check. Even amongst themselves, they are cruel and treacherous and entirely without care for those around them.   The term “dark elf” used to be popular but has gone out of fashion with the popularity of the term’s use in Earthly fantasy novels.
