Ochdinean
The city of Ochdinean is the literal centerpoint of the country, at least as nearly as can be calculated. Since the rest of the country is divided fairly evenly between the eight clans, Ochdinean is meant to bridge the gap between those segments. It is a city meant to be a capital in a country that defies authority.
Demographics
The population of Ochdinean is split fairly evenly between the eight clans, with an additional population of foreigners that is not usually found elsewhere in the country.
Government
The general council of the clans is supposedly responsible for the city, but the reality is that the residents quietly elect a mayor every two years who is responsible for keeping the city intact.
History
The city was first built by Deorma's one and only king, who died on the way to his completed palace. Unclear as to whether this was natural causes or not. Stress and assassination are both equally possible.
After that, the city became a central meeting point for the clan leaders. Clan warfare is banned on an overt level.
Points of interest
There are several fascinating points in this city. Listed here are a few.
Architecture
Thatched roofs, on a hill going up, stone buildings accented with wood. Roads are not paved. I like the look, but honestly the fancy people wouldn’t spend a ton of time in Ochdinean and the rest of them wouldn’t care. It’s well-cared-for, and has a lot of really old buildings. In some areas that are more where the permanent residents are, the buildings get tall and have a lot of those walkways stretching from avenue to avenue. Some more makeshift, some more professional. A ton of laundry hanging between rooftops. Space for horses to ride, and the roads are wider than you might think, but not a lot of give for market stalls. Most of the doors can be barricaded quite easily, which is a typical factor of most Deormic architecture. Fancy elements come from tapestries, like the rest of the country, but there’s also more ornamentation on the wooden elements. In areas associated with a lot of ritual, there can be elaborate stonework that originated largely from a culture before Deorma.
