History

In the early years of the Peacekeeper Alliance, information was not as easy to come by as it is these days with the multitude of surveilance systems and the careful use of fine print. Those requiring accurate intelligence often relied on the relative truth of living sources.   This came to a head during the Primary Territories Uprising (1574 PT - 1611 PT), during which trusting said intell was difficult and some enemy combatants refused to provide anything useful at all. So, Peacekeeper Efficiency developed a compound (Quantofluxitempadone often referred to as QFTD with variations 326 through 417 considered successful) which would allow a person to manipulate the combatants' perception of time, speeding it up or slowing it down depending on what would have the most devastating effects. This was turned into pills, which are now known as Time Dilation Tabs.   In the following couple of centuries, it became apparent that the data collected using methods such as these was not nearly as reliable as that collected through covert means and surveilance, with some subjects going as far as to lie to intelligence collectors in order to avoid further dosing.   The Time Dilation Tabs have since been repurposed by The Alliance and are now commonly used by those who need to fit more time into their standard cycle.

Utility

The drug works on the dorsolateral prefrontal right cortex, the part of the brain which perceives time. If taken in small quantities, for example, one pill taken with food, it will slow time down, allowing someone to take time to think things through or plan something out. There is an illicit market among students for this very purpose in order to allow them more time to study. However, if taken in larger quantities, more than one pill within the space of a standard cycle it can cause time warping and a distorted perception of speed and time passing. Two pills taken less than an hour apart can lead to permanent conditions.

Oo, these are kind of scary. I can see how they would be really tempting to just have a little more time...   I am glad they are no longer used for, ah, "intelligence extraction".
