An Interview with Guinevera Dargent

Are you a morning person, or more of a night owl?
They say you have to get up early in the morning to outwit some of those I find myself regularly opposed to.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person when you meet them?
Whether there’s any telltale flaw they feel the need to hide.
You see a huge spider in your room, what do you do?
Discern its aura. Learn its secrets. Find who sent it.
If you could go back and change one decision you made in the past, what would you change?
Conceive my second child on a different night.
Tell me about your first kiss.
He was rich, and gullible, and I took his wallet.
Do you give people second chances?
Sometimes its nice to have another in your debt.
Are you a cat person or a dog person?
Are you a dog, Voltaire? Seems an impolite phrasing.
Do you think you’re attractive?
Some have called me a silver fox.
What’s your worst habit?
Knowing things.
When was the last time you cried?
A great many years ago, for a handful of tears that no-one would see.
Are you a good liar?
Perish the thought.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Disrespect.
Have you ever had your heart broken?
I didn’t have it broken, my dear, I broke it.
Are you more likely to use your fists or your words in an argument?
My dear, I have nails to protect, and so many very interesting words.
What’s something you’re naturally good at?
Taking opportunities.
What’s something you had to work hard to be good at?
Winning.
Can you tell when someone is flirting with you?
What sort of woman would I be if I couldn’t?
Do you think money can buy happiness?
Freedom buys happiness. Power buys freedom. Money buys power.
Do you believe in destiny?
I will when I forge it.
Are you a good cook?
I don’t need to be.
What do you think happens after you die?
I settle a debt, and if I’ve done this right, it’s settled in my favour.
Did you have to grow up fast?
I chose to. I am no-one’s pawn.
Who do you look up to?
Rungs on a ladder.
When you go to a tavern, what do you order?
Dry white pomegranate wine with a splash of vermouth and a single drop of Efreeti gin. I call it Silk Hiding Steel.
What do you like most about yourself?
That I know how to use the power of others.
What do you like least about yourself?
That I need to.
Do you want kids someday?
I have quite enough for the moment.
Are you a planner or more spontaneous?
The trick with that one is you don’t need to choose a side.
Can you keep a secret?
Whyever would I need to, my dear?
Do you like being the centre of attention?
I don’t think I can help it, darling.
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
Bargain.
Do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?
It is my battlefield, and I am undefeated.
Where do you feel safe?
Oh no. Not yet. That comes later.
Do you love or hate being alone?
It’s refreshing, but offers limited options in the long run.
What’s the last nightmare you remember having?
The Rich Man’s annual reminder of our pact, and the consequences of failure. It’s much as you would expect. Ruin. Destitution. A legacy erased. His usual charm.
Do you admit to mistakes when you make them?
Not to you.
Do you want to grow up to be like your parents?
…no. That’s what all this is for.
How do you deal with being sick? Are you stoic or super whiney?
I’ve always endured worse.
What did your parents expect from you when you were born?
To play my small and suffocating part in a squalid cycle of timidness and codependence. Sorry mama.
Do you have a strong sense of style?
You need to sense a thing to shape it, after all.
Would you rather camp outdoors or stay the night in an inn?
Goodness, if I can’t afford at least an inn then what in the Eight’s name was this for?
Is there a food that most people like but you absolutely hate?
Bread. Potatoes. Rice. Water.
Are you more of a hoarder or a minimalist?
Clutter only distracts, but there are better, less tangible things worth hoarding.
Are you superstitious?
No, just very, very well-informed.
Are you the kind of person who remembers people’s birthdays and pet’s names and stuff?
Yes my dear, that’s called ‘a noble’.
What do you do to feel better when you’re sad?
Tip the scales back.
Is it hard for you to trust someone?
Of course not, darling. I trust you. Why?
Are you susceptible to peer pressure?
If the plans of my peers are in opposition to my own, I’ve already failed.
If you decided to stop adventuring and settle down, what kind of job would you take?
Corpse. There’s no other path where I stop.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Powerful. And alive.
