Earspeak, a form of sign language based on twitching ear movements, is one of the languages of the
Bunbun. Since Earspeak requires a lot of dexterity, only straight-eared Bunbun are able to speak it, although all Bunbun are taught to understand it, and although it rarely is, it can also be learned by other species, but again, it can only be spoken by Bunbun.
Bramble Church
Most of the time, Earspeak is the only language permitted within the
Bramble Church, the religious oligarchy that oversees the
Bunbun Warren. The church sermons are delivered by a straight-eared "Twitcher", so-called because of the twitching motion that Earspeak uses. Since floppy-eared Bunbun are unable to speak Earspeak, they cannot deliver sermons. In fact, floppy-eared Brambleites are not able to talk in church at all, apart from on the feast days of
Berryfest where vocal speech is permitted alongside Earspeak.
