Sakamohr Plain

Past the southern borders of The New Empire of Belyos, through the Edge Mountains and the pass at Enim, is the wide open area named after the Sakamohr people who inhabit it; the Sakamohr Plain.   Considered by many in the Empire to be nothing but desolate grasslands inhabited by barbarians, the Sakamohr Plains are surprisingly diverse, with forests, wetlands, hills, and steppe. Whilst the majority of the land is open, trees are not uncommon, especially on the edges of the mountain ranges that border it.   In the far south lies the only Sakamohr settlement of any size; Chiengo, although the coastline holds many small fishing and sailing villages.

Geography

The predominant defining feature of the plain is its aridity; although actual desert is rare on Pande, the nature of the mountains around the area mean that standing bodies of water are uncommon, and the majority of the vegetation relies upon the seasonal rains that fall. Rivers are relatively common, however, carrying snowmelt from the Edge Mountains and making the plains more fertile that they otherwise would be.   In the distant past, the area was more covered by trees and associated scrubland, but hundreds of years of grazing by the Sakamohr's herds of cattle and horses has rendered most of the land open grasslands. Now, vast herds of the two species dominated the biome.

History

The Sakamohr have no formal written history, but their oral histories claim that the plains are not their original homelands, but rather they occupied the lands now held by the Empire and were forced to leave when the Inheritor Gods marked the area for their loyal followers after the Inheritance War. They moved into the area they now hold, and began the slow process of growing their herds, and slowly changing the land around them. Whether the region held people before the arrival of the Sakamohr is unknown.   The most significant event of the plains was after Til-Yaltur reunified the Empire and, after a brief and unsuccessful raid by Sakamohr, led a massive Imperial army into Sakamohr, decimating the natives for hundreds of kilometres around the pass. Til-Yaltur led his forces to the Sakmohr city of Chiengo, sacking it and leaving it in ruins. It took the Sakamohr many decades to even re-occupy the area afterwards, and even today the Empire ensures that the Sakamohr population remains low.
