Adirongua

At the base of a huge waterfall from whence the Arresadi River flows this Dukedom is the first occupied territory along the river. Castles and fortresses of black stone dot the gray landscape.

Structure

  1. Duke: Leader of the dukedom, and head of the royal family.
  2. Baron: Leader of a barony, head of one of the three great noble families.
  3. Lord: Leader of a lesser noble family, serves the barons or duke directly as administrators of their land.
  4. Gentleman: Member of any noble family, serves at all levels of government. Make up the Ducal Assembly and magistrates.
Among other powers, the Ducal Assembly makes all laws, declares war, regulates intercity and foreign commerce, and controls taxation and expenditures. The noble families each have up to three representatives in the assembly, chosen by the heads of said families. The city councils also elect three representatives to the assembly. Guilds are the last to have representation and can only have a single representative.    Magistrates chosen by the duke interpret the law and hear claims and grievances on his behalf. Every city has five magistrates appointed to serve his interests for a week at a time. Any who wish to have a case heard must make the trip to the city that covers their jurisdiction.

Public Agenda

To protect and maintain its citizens and holdings. Pave, repair, and secure roads. Dig wells and sewage/ drainage ditches. Provide security from bandits and invasion. Build, maintain, and secure bridges and ports. Provide courts for high and low justice. Maintain birth and death records, and citizen rolls. Enforce construction standards on homes. Ensure doctors and priests make their rounds. Ensure skilled labor jobs are filled (carpenter, smith, weaver, glazer, etc.) Guard against disasters such as famine, fire, flood, and disease. Provide a mill, either wind or water. Provide grounds and security for fairs.

Military

The laws are enforced by the Order of Thorns, a group of knights who swear loyalty directly to the duke and his household. They command at all levels within the army and town guards. The Order of Thorns main force is a troop of 500 armati supplemented by a flight of 1,200 archers. Their leaders are mounted knights in heavy armor. They can draft the town guard for purposes of border defense, usually squad or platoon sized forces of milites.

Agriculture & Industry

Great farming estates produce wheat, oats, millet, and various other grains. Green, red, and black beans, cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli, radishes, turnips, carrots, apples, pears, peaches, pumpkins, squash, green and red grapes, bell and sweet peppers, various berries, and more feed this region and the neighboring ones.

Education

All children start their formal education at the age of 7. The Church offers academic classes on weekdays and religious classes on weekends. Here they learn the basics of language and etiquette until they age of 14. At this point they can choose their career path.   The aristocracy and gentry attend University at the capital where they first learn the trivium of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Followed by the quadrivium of arithmetic, geometry, harmonics, and astronomy. At this point they begin to learn statecraft, law, and combat from tutors in the Order of Thorns.   The common man gets their further education from their chosen craft. Guilds for hewing, masonry, bricklaying, dry walling, pioneering, Kilner's, and pargeteers are some of the largest guilds. With lumberers, whittlers, wood wrights, boat wrights, and cart wrights rounding out the the most powerful.

Currency
Any coinage will be accepted, so long as it has the right weight. The Dinar and Sodi are most often represented in their commerce. Bartering and credit take up most of their actual trade.

Leading producer of western hardwood and its products, tin, and iron and steel products. They also produce fur and leather goods using pelts of exotic animals.
