Claiming the Skies…Again
General Summary
Rico has been separated from his drake, Ykanun, long enough. In order to fix that problem, he organized a quest to go find him. However, before he went to do that, he had a personal matter to accomplish first. Gathering up Tiff Meako, they went to the throne room in Xiomara. Waiting for them was Raffyr, Folen, Jericho and Covak. Under the unnaturally darkened skies, Rico and Tiff got married by Raffyr, surrounded by a few friends.
With that personal matter settled, they rescued Savin and Lia from being stuck outside with a guard, then Tiff cast a couple of spells to contact Ykanun and find out his location. By happy coincidence, Ykanun was near a place where Tiff and Rico had previously visited, allowing them to teleport there. They soon found a cave with a few kobolds outside of it. When they explained their purpose, they were presented before the Lord of the Winds, Ykanun himself. He demanded that they approach to the foot of the cliff he landed upon, but Meako and Lia refused to get very close. Ykanun refused to believe that they were who they claimed to be. Rico was supposed to be half as awesome as Ykanun, but the man in front of him, with Rico's human face, was just a fleshy meatbag. Tiff is supposed to be smaller, pinkish and orange. Not this golden-skinned bald figure before him. And Meako is a goblin, not this gnome-smelling figure wearing his face. In order to prove their identities, Ykanun required them to successfully complete a series of challenges. He then stomped on a button which caused the ground to open, swallowing Savon and Rico immediately. Tiff, with a fly spell activated, made the split-second decision to drop below the level of the doors as they snapped shut half a second later. This saved her from getting buried by the collapsing cliff burying the door.
Meako and Lia managed to bribe Ykanun into letting them into the challenge, but due to a slight mishap with the teleportation spell, they ended up away from the party inside the dungeon challenge. The rest of them found themselves in a dimly lit, underground chamber with lots of doors leading off of it. Choosing a door at random, they quickly discovered (because Tiff cheats with her eyes!) that there was a magical trap. They managed to bypass it safely, and quickly ran into Meako and Lia. Soon after that, they discovered a door wedged shut. While they were struggling to remove the wedges to open the door, they heard a voice asking if they had come to rescue it. This was enough to get Meako to cut down the door with his adamantine sword, revealing a figure made of thousands of worms. He introduced himself as Victor Vermis, who came here seeking the power to return to his previous form. The party let him join them and continued on through the dungeon.
Once back in the original room, they tried another door but discovered it to be locked. Using her talents with lockpicking, Tiff unlocked the door. Following through the passage revealed, they ended up fighting a plasma ooze. The fight was not particularly difficult, but it was lengthened by Rico and Savin not listening to Tiff, and constantly slashing them into more oozes. Finished with the fight, they discovered that Victor had disappeared. Deciding they could not do antyhing about it yet, they moved forward where they found a door on the other side of the room, where they discovered a lever. Tiff used telekineses to pull the lever, and a loud sound of mechanical gears turning echoed through the dungeon.
Heading back to the central room, they had two doors left to check. Rico and Tiff went to a pair of double doors while Meako and Savin went to a single door. Behind the double doors, a spiral staircase leading up was revealed. Behind the single door, Meako and Savin found a crudely written message above a treasure chest claiming it as Ykanun's treasure horde. However, choosing to leave it behind, they followed after Rico and Tiff to the next level.
After following a tunnel up through the rock, they came to a bridge over a seemingly endless tunnel, where a strong wind was blowing. Once again, clearly cheating, Tiff magiced everyone across the gap. They then entered what was clearly the living quarters of the kobolds living there. One kobold told them they had made it further than any previous testees, but that they were not quite done. After checking all the nooks and crannies of the room, they took the only door out. After winding their way through a twisted passage, they came across some natural caves full of strange mushrooms. Managing to identify them as Frostflare Mushrooms which explode when approached within 5', Tiff used magic to cause the party not to take damage from the explosion of cold and they explored the tunnels, finding another lever. Tiff used telekineses to pull this lever as well, which caused another spiral staircase to appear. Taking these stairs, they found themselves in a room with a cave opening leading to the place they had started. However, as Tiff stepped out into the room, it exploded with shooting darts and spinning blades. However, the party managed to exit the room without too much pain, where Ykanun finally came to terms with the fact that they must be who they said they are.
After some discussion, Rico and Ykanun decided to reignite their bond, and the party went their separate ways.
