Exploration Game - Hex Q3

General Summary

Tiff, Rico and Matten were surprised by the arrival of two large ships at the Xiomara docks. Off the ship stepped Jaxom, back from a long absence. When he and Matten came face to face, the immediately started insulting each other fighting with their fists. Tiff and Rico worked to separate the two of them and got them talking. After they managed to air their personal grievances, the group prepared to leave the city and go exploring some land previously held by Honshu.
The next day, they flew along the river to the area they were planning to explore. As they came to the road which ends at the river, they saw a group of men walking toward the river. As the party approached them, the men became guarded. Many of them were injured. The men were lumberjacks from a nearby sawmill. They told the story of a killer tree which destroyed their sawmill, killing many of their fellows. The players healed the mens' injuries and Tiff used scrolls of teleport to get the men to Stag's Ballad. After getting the men out of danger, they moved on to try and find the creature that had attacked the lumberjacks.
After a couple of hours, they came across a treant trudging down the road while angrily yelling "They cut and burn and kill! My poor forest screams in pain! I must protect whatis left! I must kill all the tree killers!" over and over again. The players tried to talk to him and reason with him, but instead he kept repeating his mantra while activating two trees. Then he attacked.
After a few more hours of exploration, the party found an abandoned palisade fort. Looking around, they heard a child crying inside a barricaded building. Tiff and Jaxom went to investigate while Matten searched through the other buildings and Rico stood in a tower to watch the surrounding forest. Tiff. Using her telepathy, Tiff pulled the debris from the entryway of the building, triggering a trap which caused the whole building to explode. Immediately after that explosion, the letters 'NEL' briefly appeared in the air along with the sound of chuckling. The party healed up and stayed the night there.
The next day, they arrived at the destroyed sawmill. There they found the remains of most of the workers and a mass grave filled with fallen trees and wood. The spent the rest of the day wandering from sawmill to sawmill checking on the workers. They found most of them still intact, but often with at least a little damage. They were met with large amounts of passive aggressiveness about the long period of time in which they were ignored by Arbour. They also heard tales of increases in bandit and monster activity without the protection of goverment and military.
Toward the end of the day, a purple worm burst from the ground. The party managed to kill it without too much trouble. What brought this underground denizen to the surface? Was it the explosion from the day before or something else?
