Helping Mama - Missive Stone Necklace
General Summary
Sabrom decided to make a trek out to see Mama Oda and take up one of her many quests. He put a call out for others to join him and met up with Nahshon, Axel, and Lorenzo De Leur in Willowdale. Well, at least they tried.
Upon walking into Willowdale proper they were immediately confronted by the undead city guard asking for their citizenship papers or travel visas. Both Axel and Nahshon found they could not stomach the stench of undeath and turned to leave. For a moment, Lorenzo attempted to reason with the guards but decided it wasn't worth his time. Nor was the exorbitant cost of a new non-citizen visa just to walk through the city.
Meeting up outside the walls, the group decided to make their way through the forest by foot, hoping to find their way to Mama Oda's hut. Remembering to look for the path of her birds, they tracked a flock headed west away from Willowdale and across the river. Having not come prepared to cross a 2-mile wide river, Axel shifted into a crocodile and attempted to convince his companions, and their horses, to ride on his back across the river. Nahshon, having almost drowned multiple times in the past, was weary of the water. So when a women called out to them offering her barge and transport services, they happily agreed. For a small price she agreed to ferry them to their destination and back again.
It didn't take much longer to arrive on the outskirts of Mama Oda's hut but the barge was too big to navigate the small inlets of the swamp and so the party went by rowboat with Axel still in the water in crocodile form. It wasn't long before they were attacked by giant dragonflys. Beautiful though they may be, they were dangerous, and created an interesting challenge for the adventurers. The highlight of the fight came when Lorenzo leapt from the rowboat, onto Axel's back (who had sprouted wings and was now a flying crocodile) to slice into the giant dragonfly, who was currently grappled by Axel and which was actively grappling Nahshon (who was currently bleeding out). The dragonfly died, Nahshon's unconscious body dropped into the waters below, causing Axel to dash underwater to save him, while Lorenzo leapt back into the rowboat. Sabrom remained safely and sanely in the boat, using his magic attacks from afar.
Feeling confident after their victory, they continued following the flight path of Mama Oda's birds until they came upon her hut. An encounter with bogwids so disgusting that Axel refused to eat them, did not keep them finally making it to Mama Oda's hut. The odd smoke and strange man who answered the door did give them a slight pause.
Mama Oda was kind enough and asked that the adventurers leave a small token of value behind as a show of good faith that they would return with her requested item. Lorenzo, who had nothing he could leave, agreed instead to leave behind a finger. Axel stepped in to assist with it's removal and Mama Oda was satisfied. Giving the adventurers directions to where she believed her necklace could be found, she bid them good luck.
Riding the barge further south, the party began to hear the most beautiful singing as if from an angel. Nahshon, in fact, was so captivated that he leapt from the boat into the water and began feverishly swimming to shore (speaking of fever, it was at this time that Sabrom began to feel very unwell). It wasn't too long before the party realized they had a harpy in their midst and Nahshon was under it's spell. They intervened immediately and were able to slay the creature before it was able to do any harm to Nahshon. Luckily, or perhaps not, it was wearing several necklaces. Once of which, was remarkably similar in appearance and magical aura to the sister necklace that Mama Oda had shown them. Deciding to take all the jewelry and trinkets they found in the area they returned to Mama Oda's house.
By the time they arrived, Sabrom was looking absolutely horrible. His skin had taken on a black pallor, his fever was roaring, fatigued wracked his body, and his neck had begun to bulge. It was the bubonic plague. Mama Oda was pleased at their return and readily returned their good faith tokens as well as paid them in gold and items. She returned Lorenzo's finger and even reattached it for him. And for Sabrom, she healed his disease. She welcomed the adventurers to return again in the future to take up one of her quests.
The party snuck their way back through the forest and into Fjordhaven territory before heading their own ways.
