In Search of Uttercold

General Summary

In his quest to find a source of unearthly chill cold enough to defeat even the most wintery opponent. After gathering some foolhardy adventurers to join him, they journeyed north to find out if the Vistani's rumors of barbarian villages was true.   The party was prepared for the elements and snow, but the altitude of the mountain pass below the coldest temperature band proved nearly fatal. Bloodied by local fauna (and flora), they left the Vistani goods behind and pushed on to the tundra on the other side of the mountains. There, they found several villages abandoned without graves or temples, only bloodsnow-covered altars. Eventually, they happened upon the only fishing village in the area, unnamed and forgotten, but beholden to sacrifice their old and young to Queen Hulda. Fighting off her snow goblin minions, they confronted this arctic royal in the ruins of an ancient temple to an unknown god. She was haughty and demanding, but promised them the path to frozen magic if they would kill her sister, who was commanding a viking ship that threatened her village.   The party accepted her offer and found the pirates wintering nearby, arctic dwarves drunk and charmed by Hadasseh. They decided to attack the iced-in ship with a few fireballs and lightning strikes, slaying the pirates and enraging the pirate queen enough to reveal her true nature as a winter hag. Collecting the head of their contract, they returned to the Snow Queen.   Once there, they found their patron surprisingly honest and she gave Alastari a scroll detailing snowcasting, a first step to learning frozen magic. She too was likely a hag, extorting the village with weather to gain children to eat. Learning this, the party decided to attack her, slaying her guards and forcing her to reveal her true self. She bartered her life for the password to the ice golem guarding the temple, which they learned was dedicated to Ulutiu, the Sleeping God. Nevertheless, they did not let the hag live.   The village was grateful to their saviors and granted them permission to access the temple and a place to stay at the village. Their leader Fiske was especially excited, realizing that the prayer that had been passed down for 150 years by his ancestors included the password for the golem as well, and decided to reignite the flames of faith that had so long been smothered by the Snow Queen's chill. Victorious, the party returned home, but not before naming the village Snowfall.
