The Emerald Spire: The Emerald Root 08/30/2022
General Summary
Nihilus went to Xiomara to consult with Tiff about The Emerald Spire. After doing some research and not finding the answers he sought, they left with Belron and a disguised Khalid to go to The Emerald Spire. Upon arrival, they learned that Smaragdus was not there. After paying their entry fees, Nihilus ordered Musashi to capture Abernard, who promptly used magic to disappear.
With Abernard gone, they entered into the spire, where they were immediately attacked by a pair of giant creatures. When they killed the first one, its body disintegrated into ash and the voice of Smaragdus spoke out for all to hear telling Nihilus that his rudeness would preclude him from gaining any new toys in the spire this day. After the fight was over, they had a roper call them over to talk. After engaging in philosophical discussion on various topics, the roper grew bored and attacked them. However, being no match for the party, it was soon killed and the riches of its gullet looted. Afterward they fought and killed a trio of scientists, where they found crystals which would allow them to meld themselves with the roots of the spire in order to get into the other rooms. They fought mushroom creatures, where Khalid in disguise was stricken with hallucinations. They made their way into a room where they fought a pair of oozes made of crystal. Blasting their way through a wall, they destroyed a stone golem protecting a broken old orvgate. Finally, they faced off against the vault keeper himself. The vault keeper escaped for a brief time, but was finally destroyed upon the altar of Grumbar deep within The Emerald Spire. Upon his death, tremors rumbled through the structure. The ground shook, and pieces of debris fell from the cavern ceiling. A pulse of energy gathered in the branches and tendrils of The Emerald Spire root, then suddenly rushed inward and upward, ascending the Spire. From far above came a receding series of echoes of explosion after explosion, gradually diminishing as they ascended toward the distant tip of The Emerald Spire.
Exiting the tower after collecting everything of value not bolted down, they found the camp deserted. After an argument about burning down the remnants of the camp, the party went their separate ways. Soon after leaving, Nihilus returned and disintegrated the cart left at the camp.
