Lerin

Centaur-like sheep-infused humans, native to both Lerinim (which is named after them) and Teytonol. whether the two groups have a single origin or not is unclear.   Western Lerin, especially those from the uplands, make ferocious pseudo-cavalry, faster than regular troops and often heavily armoured, attacking using weighted chains and flails which they learn to use with a shield in the offhand; throwing, whirling, and retrieving their weapons with superb skill. By legend, these techniques are development of sling and lasso techniques used by shepherds. some examples:
  • make skirting passes at spear-blocks, whirling their chains to shatter spear-shafts.
  • alternatively, using running passes to toss grappling hook-like weapons into the formation and pull it apart
  • throwing and then retrieving their flail-heads at a range of 8-20 feet, outranging most spears, in order to strike individuals in enemy formations.
  • training to whirl their chains safely in relatively dense formations while also defending themselves with shields.
  • if forced to close into a shield wall, the front line switches to using short thrusting-swords while the back ranks throw their flails overhead.
  • if required, they can use slings very effectively - though by preference they leave the shooting to the lightly-armoured archers that often accompany them.
They are capable of operating in rank and file (generally long thin units, with wider spacing than infantry) or in skirmish formations and are especially effective against light or heavy infantry. However, in recent years - with Lerinim being an increasingly peaceful place - this elite force has diminished in effectiveness somewhat.
