Otter
Human-sized sentient sea-otters that live amidst the masses of grinding kelp in the Bindkelp Sea. Their paws are more dextrous than a typical otter, and they can speak human languages, but otherwise they are very much like normal otters. they are curious, intelligent, and mischievous.
they keep Urchins as slaves and servants, as well as considering them a delicacy. Some otter communities abandoned eating/enslaving Urchins, and have a complex relationship with their ancestors and their cultural pride.
they live in settlements that float moored amidst the bindkelp, which they alone hold the secret to manipulating.
Otters use a writing system made from knotted ropes. . Smaller ropes are tied to vertical "rungs" that act as lines to "write" along. Knots are complicated but dense with meaning - a logographic system. Arranging elegant arrays of knots across the "page" is part of poetic/artistic composition. A "Knot" can also refer to an extended family or Community within Otter culture
magical traditions:
- peltmages
- kelpmages
- why did otters abandon eating urchins? what forced them? make sure to give Urchins agency! but also external allies (who?).
- do they live in anchored kelp too? is bindkelp anchored, just really deep - extremely long kelp strands? or do they just live in communities nearer the coast too?
