Helenskep House of Correction
"Oh come on, Jonno, be a pal, I was on my way home!" "That is Seargent Johnothan to you while I'm on duty, Matthew, and I am on duty now. You know better than to be drinking too much at the Yacht club nowadays. We all had the education session on appropriate behaviour in public, and being violentlty ill and falling asleep outside of the Widow Ryan's is NOT considered appropriate!" "Jonno, I'm just a few doors from home, I didn't realize I was so bad until I got outside, it's the weather, it's too hot!" "It's snowing." "I'm too hot for this snow, I'm just going home, come on..." The shadows behind Johnothan grow larger and more oppressive, and a figure breaks off. "We'll take it from here now, Seargent." "Oh, um, I was about to take him to the station to sleep it off, sir." "It sounded like he was attempting to bribe an officer of the law, Seargent. You do know what the penalty for accepting a bribe is, now that you're a member of the Parcadian Constabulary?" "Yes, sir. The training was very descriptive." "And as one of the finest new members of the Helenskep Preceint, I'm sure you'll remember what the pentalties are for citizens bribing the Constabulary?" "Um, yes sir, but Matt.. I mean Mr. Wendell appears to be inebreated and not knowing what he's saying. I thought it would be better to keep him at the station house overnight, especailly since it could be difficult to take him up the Cliff Lift." "Well, it's a good thing the patrol is here to help him on his way. Fellows, take this man to the House." Two figures heave up Matthew by the arms, while a third prepares the documentation to ensure a swift triage at the House of Corrections. They swiftly drag him in the direction of the Cliff Lift. A voice is heard reading off the Notification of Entry to the House of Corrections. Johnothan is left in front of the Widow Ryan's with his commanding officer. "Sir, this isn't how it was when either you or I signed up for this." "I know." "Three years ago, you would have been the one in the bushes, with me and Matt dragging you home." "Three years ago I was sailing too close to the wind. The House got me back on course and taught me how to live life as a productive member of society." "Marcus, we sailed with sharks back then, times were tough for the three of us, but you and I got education before they started keeping people in the House for weeks. Matt just needs a day to sober up, then he can go for a day-course." "Matthew is beyond sleeping it off. He needs proper care to get away from the alcohol. We can look after him properly at the House. He'll have everything he needs there, and he won't be dragged back down by the barnicles here that keep him from rising up."
Purpose / Function
The Governing Body of Parcadia built the House of Correction to help introduce the people of Helenskep to the rules that govern Parcadia. Any dealings with the laws of Parcadia are mediated from this building, as well as educational seminars to introduce the people of Helenskep to the more formal laws and regulations of Parcadia. For the additional protection of the people of Helenskep, there are a number of holding cells for criminals of Parcadia who have been deemed too dangerous to be out in civilized society until they can be educated in proper behaviour.
Alterations
Gates and watchtowers were added when people in need of correcting began to be held for multiple days, or weeks, until they were properly instructed in how they should behave in Parcadian society.
Architecture
The building is bleak, even though it is built to the highest standards of modern Parcadian infrastructure. Something about the nature of the structure oozes out between the mortar of the large bricks that form the walls. It may be the smaller windows, or the doors with additional gates that require separate keys to open, or the watchtowers surrounding the property.
History
Built as part of the amalgamation of Helenskep into Parcadia.
Recently, many of the seminar rooms have been changed into more cells for longer stays by people in need of reeducation. Guard towers have been added, not to keep the people in, but to ensure that the locals of Helenskep are not interfering with the guests outside of operating hours.
