Runesmen

Runesmen are the tradespeople who create, repair, recharge and research Runes
This is a generic profession title for anyone who works with Runes under the government of Central Parcadia.   This is a secular carrer path that is not to be confused with the Shaman or the Affineur of Runic Knowledge.

Career

Qualifications

In the modern era, Runesmen are drawn from those who show aptitude in the Parcadian Education System. They can also come from newly Unified City Centers that do not have access to PES yet, if they show interest and aptitude.   Originally post-unification, families would select a child to be trained by the local Runesman. This led to inconsistant education of Runesman as there was no centralized guidance on what a Runesmane needed to know to be successful. There were also rumours of corruption where a Runesman could paid by a family to take a child that didn't show much aptitude, but needed to be quielty "moved away" from their family.

Career Progression

Probitionary Runesman - students in their first or second year of training as a Runesman.
Novice Runesman 3rd class - the most junior of Runesmen who have signed the contract to continue training. Responsible for the most boring, repetative, and dirty tasks.
Novice Runesman 2nd class - a Runesman who has learned the basics of the craft and requires mentorship and practice
Novice Runesman 1st class - Spends a significant amount of time preparing for their senior test and delegating tasks to the 3rd class novices.
Senior Runesman - Can do any normal task associated with Runes. Most Runesmen remain at this level for the rest of their carreer as generalists. Completing their senior test allows Runesmen to return to their home communities, or travel elsewhere where they are needed.
Runesmaster - the speicialized level beyond Senior Runesman, focusing on special skills:
  • Purser - the finances around Runesmithing, such as pricing existing runes, and costs for repairing and recharging
  • Runewright - creating new specialized Runes
  • Scholar - studying Runic energy and learning to do new things with Runes
  • Mentor - teaching the Probitionary and Novice Runesmen, running the yearly Rune Aptitude test

Payment & Reimbursement

The cost of Runesmitthing goes to the organization to support their housing and other government-run services. This has proved more popular than "taxation" that other governments have done, as citizens recieve tangible services from their payments.   Runesmen live comfotably in state-provided dorms and housing. Senior Runesmen and Runemasters are able to apply for private dwellings while they are supporting a family. Once the family is grown, the Runsman and their spouse will more than likely move into a semi-private dwelling, shaing with one or two other older couples to ensure there is housing for new families.

Other Benefits

Runesmen are always welcome at the grand houses of Parcadian Society. It is considered lucky to have Runesmen attend any celebration.
A travelling Runesman in good standing can always find lodgings in any City Center, even if it is not their home dorm.
